In 2016 while running LocalGiving, Marcelle Speller, Brevio's founder, co-funded the Smarter Grants Initiative which surveyed 500 UK charities and discovered:
- 99% wanted changes to the grant making process
- 94% wanted a central database of funders
- 65% wanted standardised application forms 
And so Brevio was born.

2018/19
Quantifying and prototyping

Research with the University of Bath established that charities spend £1.1bn per year writing grant applications - and 66% fail. We iterated application prototypes using feedback from charities and grant-makers large and small.

2019/2020
Launch of standardised application

When the Covid crisis hit, we brought forward the launch of Brevio, offering it free of charge to charities and matching them with the funders who were on the platform. By year end, over 1,500 charities and nonprofits had signed up.

2021
3,000 grants listed

The number of grants listed on the platform continue to grow, with 3,000 by July representing £3bn in grants. Charities are detailing their immediate, often existential needs, which funders can explore, enabling real-time data backed grant making.

A team of game changing innovators

Brevio’s team brings skills and experience from government, academia, the third and private sectors - united with a passion to bring positive change to UK grant making. Our target is for 75% of the UK’s £6bn in grants to be listed on Brevio and matched to UK charities and nonprofits. At this scale, Brevio’s tools and processes will significantly simplify and streamline grant research, matching, application and due diligence for the benefit of the whole sector, and all its beneficiaries..
